[Indonesia] Indonesia to Issue Permits to Import 700,000 Cattle in 2017

Indonesia said on Tuesday (13/09) it would issue permits to import 700,000 cattle for slaughter in 2017 as well as shipping in additional buffalo meat from India, as it looks to control climbing food prices.

Since coming to power in October 2014, President Joko Widodo has pursued food self-sufficiency to protect farmers, but the result has often been volatile prices and worried investors, eroding support for the government.

[Indonesia] Govt to Impose Broodstock Import Requirement
The government will soon require cattle importers to also import brood-stock by the end of the year in a latest attempt to recover the local cattle population.

Indonesia’s cattle population has dropped in the last five years following an ill-advised government decision to tighten cattle imports based on its pursuit of beef self-sufficiency.

The policy created beef shortages in the local market and spiked beef prices so high that local farmers were persuaded to butcher their brood-stock for a quick cash gain. The Agriculture Ministry tried to stem the trend by making it illegal to slaughter heifer or cows, but with no avail.

Communications and Information Technology Minister Rudiantara said he plans to phase out the certification requirement for international brand mobile phones in January 2017 to speed up the availability of the latest technology, in a bid to boost the country’s economy.

“The initiative will be implemented in January next year. Big brands such as iPhone and Samsung have more advanced test labs than us,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday (13/09).

The Ho Chi Minh City’s People Committee has sent a proposal to the government on permitting Japanese investors to build an underground shopping center where an urban railway station is being built at Ben Thanh Market.

City authorities suggested the government approve the joint venture between a Japanese consortium of the Toshin Development JSC, JOIN, Nikken Sekkei Civil Engineering Limited, and Osaka Chikagai.
